Terms used
Client and Server
One machine is known as the Client[1] machine while the other is the Server[2]. While it does not really matter who does what, we will normally refer to Courseplanner as the Client and Flight Simulator as the Server.
Port Number and Host name
To talk to each other Courseplanner and Flight Simulator uses 2 important piece of information, a port number [3] and a host name[4].
The Host name and port number is used by the Client[1] to connect to the Server[2] The port number is also used by the Server to listen to one or more client connections.
Firewall
Most modern computers limit the network access using a firewall[5]. Simply put, a firewall is designed to prevent unauthorized software access to a networked computer system, (it could be the internet or your other computer.
So when Courseplanner tries to connect to your networked machine you will most likely be challenged by your firewall to ask you if you want to allow it to connect to the network.
Windows default firewall:
Microsoft Vista firewall.[6]
Microsoft WinXP firewall.[7]
Other firewalls
There many other types of firewall, for more help on configuring commercially-available firewalls, please see your firewall manufacturer's site directly.
